    Description

I purchased these many years ago in an antique shop. From my research, they are antique brass gold weights created by the Akan peoples of The Gold Coast of West Africa during what is considered the "Late Period" from the 18th to 19th century because they have very clearly defined feature, are shown as different characters with strong expressions.   From 1400 AD to late 1700 AD geometric weights were used, and then figurative forms (of people, animals, buildings) come from the later period.  The weights were made using the "lost wax" method.  What makes these so very collectible is that each figure is different, uniquely made by the artisan.  The figures are 1 and 3/4ths inches to 2 and 1/2 inches high, considered typical for these gold weights. I am not a specialist in the field of African weights but thing they are fascinating and historical.
